Analysing Music Videos - Tube Chop

This Music video by Katy Perry is made very much using the 'illustrative' style. I have chosen to analyse and tube chop this video asIi really like the style and mise enscene of it asIi think it represents the song well and is done in the style thatIi would like to do my video in.I also like the way that the video is made out to be like a small film.

This clip from the video shows really well the effectiveness of the bright colours and costumes included in the mise en scene and how they fit in completely to this 'pop' style music video. It is very literal and the lyrics are shown by what is going on in the scene whilst also being sung by Katy Perry, as if she is telling a story by singing. Close up's are used in this shot to focus in on the singer and to help carry through the 'illustration' technique. The other main type of shot that is used is long shots so the audience can see the whole shot and the relationship between the lyrics and the video is emphasised more.

This section of video is taken from the very beginning and introduces the music video to be film-like, this is done through the use of the opening titles and the whole of the mise en scene as it would be viewed as a very typical american film opening. This was probably done to make the audiecne more interested in the video as it is slightly unconventional and this technique, or something similar, is something I would think about using in my music video to try and make it stand out.

In this clip I like how the music changes slightly so it seems as though it is being performed live by the man on the saxaphone and the rest of the band and this shows further the use of the 'illustrative' genre in this clip. This type of convention engages the audience as the video seems more real. We will take inspiration from this when making our video as we like how the band is made to be part of the video and story.
