Claude Levi-Strauss' theory of binary opposites is mildly applied to our video in regards to him looking back. The place he is in now is much happier ie. with his friends and band members, as opposed to his childhood which we see in the flashback scenes where he is seen to have unhappier times.
Vladimir Propp's theory of character roles also sort of applies to our video. The lead singer is the 'hero' in a sense as the story is based around him, whilst his band members are his 'helpers' as they give him a place of space and happiness where he can reflect and be himself. Whilst the parents are in some ways the 'villains' as they create a sense of unhappiness in the 'hero's' life.
Tzvetan Todorov's theory that every story has an equilibrium that is disturbed and is then restored through a 3 part narrative structure. In our video the equilibrium will be him telling the story of his life, the disruption of the equilibrium will be when we see the flashbacks of him as a child when he is unhappy and the restoration of the equilibrium will be when we see his with his friends and band members.

Representations in our Music Video
Who?
Our music video will consist of 4 main actors and 4 extra band members. One of the actors, Joe, will also play the main singer in the band. The other actors are Emma and Henry, who will play the mother and father, and then Scott who will play the younger 'Joe' in the story. The 4 other band members will then be used for the performance aspect at the end.
What?
The music video will have a performance towards the end of the song but it will mainly be acted out and sung through a story with a series of flashbacks. The story is based on the lead singer of the band looking back at his life, linked with the song and lyrics.
Where?
We have a few loactions in our video, the first will be a hotel room in which the main story of looking back takes place. The second will be in Katie's house, and this loaction will be used for the flashbakc secenes as will be focused on families for this part. The final location will be a small field for the band performance scene as we think this will look effective and fit in with our indie theme whilst still being in keeping with the rest of the video.
Why?
We have chosen actors and band members that we think look good and realistic together. The locations we have chosen for the video will help to give it the indie and believable themes we are going for in order to make sure it is a successful music video. We don't have many locations as we think the more simplistic the video is the more effective it will be as an end product.
How?
We plan out our video and shooting schedules thoroughly and realisitcally in order for us to do this well. We have put lots of thought into styling and mise en scence to hopefully give depth to our music video and make sure it is suitable for our themes etc. We have done a risk assesment and will soon be putting up our storyboard and animatic which willl help us to be much more organised when we shoot so we can perfect the shots rather than wasting time wondering what to do.

Band apperance
Our band with be styled simular to Mumford & Son's because of the smart casual dress this creates the look we were wanting youth with experiance and knowledge but yet fun and willing to challange. This look is singnificant to our band, and it was we to follow to.
Vaccines
Mumford & Sons
Artitic Monkeys
Friendly Fires
The Wombats
Shooting Schedule
Sunday 9th October is when we plan to shoot our interiors for the video, it will be in the Travel Lodge hotel in Lutterworth and we will only need the main character/singer.
The props we will need, will inlcude the vinyl and photo we are using as time portals.
Friday 14th October we will shoot the other interiors not at the hotel, this will be in Katie's house. We will need the same props, again as time portals. And we will need the mum and dad and (younger) son in these scenes.
On this day (14th Oct) we will also be filming some of the exteriors linked with the house and memories.
Sunday 23rd October is when we will film the exteriors with the band. The only props we will need is the instruments and then all the band members will be needed.

AS i look into my idea of Alice in Wonderland I found this image- Which gave me inspiration to use time in Tree's as I think it's significant. A Tree often holds the most knowledge and history than anyone on we can see this on the inside of the tree from they layers but another way to look upon on it would be the way children books look at it. Here's an example of wisdom being held in a tree:
(Winnie the Pooh)
So I thought i would look into the ironicness of a tree holding time it's self.

Tube Chop Analysis - Richard Ashcroft, A Song For the Lovers
This video has given us a lot of inspiration for our own and we hope to create similar effects to this one. The tube chop's below will show which aspects we hope to adapt to our video and area's of it that have inspired us.
This clip shows off well the idea of isolation and lonliness and this is something we want to portray in our video as it fits in well with the song we have chosen. We also like the aspect when he turns on the stereo and the song starts playing. We think this is a really effective use of the amplification/disjuncture genre as he is listening to the song that he has sung. We hope to adapt this idea into our video and we plan to use it but instead with a docking station, and it will be slightly more obvious that our actor is the singer of the song.
In this clip where he is getting ready in the bathroom and singing the odd few word along to his song, we think it is really effective for the genre and we are impressed with the camera work as we are trying to figure out a way of filming in a mirror without the camera being seen. Our video will take inspiration from this clip as we hope to use the idea of having the main actor/singer singing along whilst the background song is playing.
The reason we have selected this part if the video is because we think the camera work is really effective when it goes in to a close up of his face. We can see his emotions really clearly and we can tell that he is confused and thinking about something and he is also feeling lonely. I think this piece of camera work if used in our video could work really well when we need to show our singers emotions before and after we see the flash backs.

JetPack Mockery Logo
this was some text styles that i had a play around with after loioking into most bands having logos as simply text styles, however i thought that with our band being mostly about reply of time and the inspiration being from the 70s it needed to be something about time so therefore I created the clock (refrencing the top of the page) this is now our new logo with the impact of time playing a crucial part within the band and therefore the logo and as our band is such a unique band i thought we would need a unique logo. Our idea is to play with the thoughts of time and the impact it has upon our life(see the video). This will also flow throughout costume, the looks of the band, the advertisment campaign, and our album covers.

Idea Change
After reviewing our idea, we have decided to alter it sligthly. We will now be doing a disjunctive video. We have decided this change because we realised that our ideas were perhaps too complex before and it would have been very hard to shoot and it would have looked unrealisitc. We have decided to do a simpler idea involving a son of a family going through troubles and he is having flashbacks. We will use the same song as it still fits and we have the same audience etc, therefore all of our previous research still applies.
Our next post will have our refined idea with more detailed information about it.

Digipack Ideas
As I think more about it, I think more of our band being assosiated with its wierd takes and dreams to be linked to Alice in Wonderland. Especially with the Clocks go back album, so with this I decided i would take this trail of thought. Therefore i began to image the rabit with the pocket watch, which imspired me to take photos of my pocket watch.

Audience Profile
Our audience is mainly teenagers and young adults from the age range 16-25. We are aiming at both males and females who have indie influences in their lifestyles.
They would probably be at university or studying A-Levels and have a strong interest in alternative rock music. They would have spent the summer at festivals like Reading and Leeds enjoying listening to the music they love.
They would enjoy social networking and keeping up to date with their favourite bands and musicians through sites like ‘Twitter’ and ‘Facebook’ in order to be in the know for new song releases and gigs.

Inspiration - The Verve, Bitter Sweet Symphony
We like this video by The Verve as we think the way in which the main singer appears to be isolated from everyone and everything else links to ideas we have for our video and it has given us inspiration for other factors like camerawork and editing.
This clip is taken from the very start of the video and we like the way that one main shot is used over this time period to introduce the character/singer. The camera moves seems to pan in time with the music and we get to see the singer from his feet and then we are eventually introduced to him and the environment he is in. The way in which this is shot helps to give an immediate understanding to the audience of the singer and perhaps what the story of th esong and video will be about.
In this clip we ar einspired by the simplicity of the camerawork and the fact that only one shot is used the whole time, the camera is on a track which is somethign that we couldn't do, but we can still take inspiration from it for our video. The extras in the shot help to show the singer/chrarcters carelessness and how he is only worried about the problem he has on his mind rather than what is going on around him. This is something that we will try and use in our video to help to show the singers emotions clearly.
In this clip the camera work changes and becomes more varied. This helps to keep the audiences interest as the song approaches the chorus. We see close up's of his face and then of his feet so we are following his footsteps. Then, later on in the clip the camera makes the illusion that we are seeing things through the singers eyes. His lonliness and carelessness is again emphasised through this convention. This is something that we hope to use in our video as it is a unique way of showing the characters emotions.
The final part of this video shows the main singer from The Verve being joined by the rest of the band mates. This is similar to one of our ideas as we want the singer of our bad, JetPack Mockery, to be the main character telling the story of the song and the rest of the band to be only in it for a few shots.
Inspiration - Ed Sheeran, The A Team
This video has inspired us a lot and has given us many of our ideas for our video. We like the black and white colours which run throughout the video and that convention is something that we are strongly thinking of taking away from this video and putting into our own.
This clip shows an idea similar to one we have. The fact that the girl is on a park bench and looks sad and lonely, links to our idea of having the male vocalist of our band sitting in the street with the same emotions. We like how everything works together on this and how little details in the mise en scene make it look authentic and believable. For example, the girl has rips in her tights and the black and white mise en scene fits with her emotions.
Another part of this video that really inspires us is the camerawork and this is shown off really well in this clip. The part where the camera is following the girls footsteps has a lot of impact as it is showing her journey of her everyday life tht she has to live. Then, the part in which the camera is below the girl emphasises how she is looking up and wanting better things in her life. We hope to take ideas from this and be as effective with our camera work so that we can help to aid the storyline and show meaning with it.
This clip of the video inspires us because of the fast paced editing which is combined with the girl seeming as though she is filmed seperately. This is really effective and shows that she feels she is different to other people and is just watching the world rush by infront of her. We are impressed by this level of editing and how it helps to tell a story and we are going to take inspiration from this when making our own video.
Analysing Music Videos - Tube Chop
This Music video by Katy Perry is made very much using the 'illustrative' style. I have chosen to analyse and tube chop this video asIi really like the style and mise enscene of it asIi think it represents the song well and is done in the style thatIi would like to do my video in.I also like the way that the video is made out to be like a small film.
This clip from the video shows really well the effectiveness of the bright colours and costumes included in the mise en scene and how they fit in completely to this 'pop' style music video. It is very literal and the lyrics are shown by what is going on in the scene whilst also being sung by Katy Perry, as if she is telling a story by singing. Close up's are used in this shot to focus in on the singer and to help carry through the 'illustration' technique. The other main type of shot that is used is long shots so the audience can see the whole shot and the relationship between the lyrics and the video is emphasised more.
This section of video is taken from the very beginning and introduces the music video to be film-like, this is done through the use of the opening titles and the whole of the mise en scene as it would be viewed as a very typical american film opening. This was probably done to make the audiecne more interested in the video as it is slightly unconventional and this technique, or something similar, is something I would think about using in my music video to try and make it stand out.
In this clip I like how the music changes slightly so it seems as though it is being performed live by the man on the saxaphone and the rest of the band and this shows further the use of the 'illustrative' genre in this clip. This type of convention engages the audience as the video seems more real. We will take inspiration from this when making our video as we like how the band is made to be part of the video and story.

Twitter Feed
We have set up a twitter feed for our band 'JetPack Mockery' and the twitter name is @JetPackM
We will add 'tweets' and hopefully gain followers throughout our coursework process.
Magazine Advert Research
This magazine advert is good beacuse it looks sort of 3D and uses good colour choices. It also includes the bands logo in the middle of the advert and has just the minimum information it needs to make it a successful advert.
Artists Names
We have come to a decision between us and our band name will be JetPack Mockery. I will now explore Logo's etc, for this name.
Magazine Advert Research
We like this magazine advert because it includes three simple colours whilst still, along with the artwork, it grabs the readers attention.

Album Artwork
Magazine Advert Research
This maagzine advert is very original and is simple in the sense that it only includes the information that is needed in order to promote the band and album. We like the black and white effect used here as it is the theme we will have in our video, so is something that we could use in our advert.
Magazine Advert Research
On this magazine advert we like the simplicity of it and the watercolour effect the image has. This type of advert is probably something we would use ideas from when we create ours as it is eyecatching and creates impact.
Bitter Sweet Sympathy
I think that the simplicity of this video would work extremely well with the simplicity of the song, with the idea of the connection of the lyrics to the actually movement signifies the thoughts of the song and conveys the movements. w
