Babyshambles advert analysis
The use of red portrays Love and War, the Nature. Red is a hot colour. It's a strong color that conjures up a range of seemingly conflicting emotions from passionate love to violence and warfare. Red is Cupid and the Devil by classic beliefs which is what this advert is using to play with the concept of time. Aa a stimulant, red is the hottest of the warm colurs. The expression seeing red indicates anger and may stem not only from the stimulus of the color but from the natural flush (redness) of the cheeks, a physical reaction to anger, increased blood pressure, or physical exertion.
Red is power, hence the red power tie for business people and the red carpet for celebrities and VIPs (very important people).
Flashing red lights denote danger or emergency. Stop signs and stop lights are red to get the drivers' attention and alert them to the dangers of the intersection.
In some cultures, red denotes purity, joy, and celebration. Red is the color of happiness and prosperity in China and may be used to attract good luck.
Red is often the color worn by brides in the East while it is the color of mourning in South Africa. In Russia the Bolsheviks used a red flag when they overthrew the Tsar, thus red became associated with communism. Many national flags use red. The red Ruby is the traditional Fortieth Wedding Anniversary gift.

Using Red:
- Use the color red to grab attention and to get people to take action.
- Use red when you don't want to sink into the background.
- Use red to suggest speed combined with confidence and perhaps even a dash of danger.
- A little bit of red goes a long way. Small doses can often be more effective than large amounts of this strong color.
- Multiple shades of red and even pink or orange can combine for a cheerful palette.
Using Red with Other Colors:
- Although not normally considered an ideal coupling, in combination with green, red is a Christmas color — a joyful season.
- Cool blues provide contrast and tone down the heat of red.
- Light pinks and yellows are harmonizing colors that can work well with red if not too close in value such as dark red with a pale or golden yellow.
- Be careful using purple. It can be an elegant combination but too much could be overpowering.
- Add a dash of red to a soft but sophisticated pink and gray combo.
- For some countries, including the US, red, white, and blue is a very patriotic trio even if the shades of red and blue differ from those used in the flag.
Red Color Palettes:
These color palettes feature shades of red used with a variety of yellows, blues, greens, and neutrals. Explore these red color swatches to find which of the colors in the red family are the most attention-grabbing, mysterious, friendly, sophisticated, or mentally stimulating.

evaluation draft
Q1
This will be a film with me speaking over the top of my video & Digigpak with add in of other music videos and images which show where we got our ideas from. Points that I will cover will follow, There wont be script as I see that too structured but I will cover these points they may not be in this order.
Theorys
· Claude Levi-Strauss' theory of binary opposites is mildly applied to our video in regards to him looking back. The place he is in now is much happier ie. with his friends and band members, as opposed to his childhood which we see in the flashback scenes where he is seen to have unhappier times.
· Buildens roman and how we the characters journey throughout his life and we see him come to terms in the end of the video
· Vladimir Propp's theory of character roles also sort of applies to our video. The lead singer is the 'hero' in a sense as the story is based around him, whilst his band members are his 'helpers' as they give him a place of space and happiness where he can reflect and be himself. Whilst the parents are in some ways the 'villains' as they create a sense of unhappiness in the 'hero's' life.
· Tzvetan Todorov's theory that every story has an equilibrium that is disturbed and is then restored through a 3 part narrative structure. In our video the equilibrium will be him telling the story of his life, the disruption of the equilibrium will be when we see the flashbacks of him as a child when he is unhappy and the restoration of the equilibrium will be when we see him relax to the end.
Filming methods/inspiration
· Richard Ashcroft -This clip shows off well the idea of isolation and lonliness and this is something we want to portray in our video as it fits in well with the song we have chosen. We also like the aspect when he turns on the stereo and the song starts playing. We think this is a really effective use of the amplification/disjuncture genre as he is listening to the song that he has sung.
· The verve-This clip is taken from the very start of the video and we like the way that one main shot is used over this time period to introduce the character/singer. The camera moves seems to pan in time with the music and we get to see the singer from his feet and then we are eventually introduced to him and the environment he is in. The way in which this is shot helps to give an immediate understanding to the audience of the singer and perhaps what the story of th esong and video will be about.
· A team- Sheeran- We like how everything works together on this and how little details in the mise en scene make it look authentic and believable. For example, the girl has rips in her tights and the black and white mise en scene fits with her emotions.
· Jessie J-Room
· Forest- mythically Robin hood (place of safety because of peoples thoughts and suspicions)- safety for the character however it is also of danger as the past is stalking him (wolf & Robin hood) BOTH CHILDHOOD STORYS, THE BOY BELIEVES THEM ALSO. Ironic that he is chasing him without either of them realising.
Narrative
· Pink, painful childhood. How he has turned out now, he has become more than his dad ever was.
· Swings (Artic Monkey) something a child should enjoy- deserted play ground alone.
· Angel and devils- from the old myth.
Digi pack
· The Car’s Album.
· Alice in wonderland-Madhatter
· Winnie the Pooh
· Mumford and sons
· I saw that one of the band memebers from Mumford and sons takes phot's and shares them on their website with their fans to keep a specail connection with their fans, as i saw this. I know i have a collection of photos at home which could be used for something very simular so I thought I would share these with my Band's fans in a insert inside the Digipack, as they are an indie band they want top keep this unique look.
·
EVALUATION 2. How effective is the Combination of Your Main Product and Ancillary Texts?
JetPack Mockery, Why?
JetPack stands for the manufactured world, how machinery is often used a lot in our generation of music, and their thrust for money. Mockery, because we mocking the machinery we are attempting to prove that we do not need that manipulation of voice and we can still make music for passion and that we do not need to play with voice to make it sound brilliant.
We as a band thought that the key to our new album would be time play as we had some old covers on the album. Therefore we used the key theme throughout the new “a Promise” video. The key thing with our album cover once again was time play, but also the natural world. Also a shock of realism was meant to hit people as they read into our music, and our lyrics. We attempt to reach out to people and to hold their connection with the natural world but also with time play. This capturing people to make people think and in all hope to act differently. To show how we as people affect the world, affect other and hurt others.
The theme of memories ties in with our Album cover and how the past affects the future and the impact that cruelty in some childhoods can hold. This is obviously a key theme behind the “A Promise” video.
Evaluation Question 3 What have you learned from your audience feedback?
The feedback I reserved from my digi pack was positive all I had to do was bring the title out of the image which was easy as I dropped shadowed it therefore it meant that the words stood out of the page.
After feedback from the draft for the video we changed the lead singer, we improved out editing skills as it was not originally in time, and the singer didn’t look realistic as they were enthusiastic. We improved the framing of the shoots as sometimes the heads were cut off etc. We changed the transitions so the narrative was clearer. We changed the locations of some shots as the mise en scene wasn’t as effective, we also got rid of the band scenes, we complete re story boarded as we needed new ideas to make the narrative clearer.
Using Adobe creative suite I designed my Digi pack and advert, In adobe Photoshop I was able to develop the images and manipulate them. The back image of my digi pack I had to manipulative and stamp over using the clone tool, this meant I was able to use the image as the image was such a good one taken from a while ago by me of my sister, I was also able to create a mirror image to create a message of nature mirroring.
The images I used for my digi pack cover and content were taken on the canon D 500 and a Nikon. Using the Canon means I can capture images at different scenes easily being able to manipulate the image and the focus, however using the Nikon I am more formula with. The Nikon was used for the images in the leaflet, an iPhone was also used for a one, this is because the IPhone is easy to capture and image say when I was walking in the Shetlands (sheep and bird).
Using InDesign meant I could make the layout and quality of my digipack and advert better. This is because of the structuring in Adobe InDesign, I can line things up and add effect therefore I can send it to print because of the line match up points etc.
I used Illustrator to make the Logo, which meant I could line things up, re draw and create because of the live trace and live paint tools, but it also means that I can use the image for anything as I create it in InDesign and this is because it is used in practice. The image was and srtill would be easy to manipulate and recreate for any purpose.
Social networking
Social networking is a crucial thing in practice, Using Twitter, YouTube and Facebook you can get hold of your audience for free and capture their minds and address your fans allowing them to get hold of promotions but you can also build a connecting between each other. Twitter is something which is held as one of the leading places to get your audience. Using Wix my band could also publish their website for free having their rights to the URL which is another way to promote you well. Wix was easy to use, and you can make it your own style the only problem is that it still doesn’t have the same effect as Dreamweaver has, as it’s very boxy. However this was free and easy, you can use the website privately which means you can edit it still. The use of Wix would mean that the band can promote their new singles and albums and tour dates which as a band is crucial. You can’t access PayPal over Wix which means that you couldn’t sell to people as easily and the website will never be truly safe as Wix will have the rights. However as a band you could set up an EBay account. Twitter gave us some feedback and having our own Facebook page meant that we could connect with other band members. #FF proved to help us generate followers which meant you could reach out to a wider audience which once again is crucial.
For filming we started using the 500D to film which we had to be careful with as the lense and shutter isn’t used to moving lights unless slow shutter which meant that the lense itself could prove problems lasting to the camera. The camera itself was HD but it still didn’t capture like a cam recorder does so we decided to film again with a sony film recorder which meant that the image was better quality moving and wasn’t jumping from frame to frame.
Tube chop meant that we could use specific clips from videos, which meant that we could focus upon those clips making the research and planning more accurate. Using Flickr meant that I could display all my photo’s I have taken so that people could give me feeback upon the images.
Draft Evaluation Question 4
Evaluation Question 4
I have used many technologies throughout the researching and planning parts of my coursework. I have had to find ways to help present my ideas and inspirations for my own music video. To do this I used blogger as this was a way for me to keep myself organised with my ideas and for my teachers to see what sort of ideas I had in mind. It was also a good way for me and Katie so share our ideas together. For the inspiration for our video, I used mainly ‘YouTube’ as this has most music videos on it. I then used ‘Tube Chop’ to highlight key parts of the videos that inspired me and commented on them through the blog. It also made it easier for me to show what parts of the videos I wanted to use or copy into my own. We also set up a twitter account for our band during the research and planning process to try and create an audience for our band. When pitching our original ideas to the rest of the class to get some audience feedback we used animoto. This was an effective way of presenting our initial ideas.
When searching for inspiration and ideas for the digipack and magazine advert I found it more difficult. I could only really find posters for albums and album covers rather than digipack’s. So I overcame this by using ‘Bing’ or ‘Google’ to search for covers and adverts that I could find. I also looked at actual digipack’s that I borrowed from people or found at home. I created these ancillary texts using Photoshop. I used my CS5 version that I had on my home computer as I found it easier than the schools and it had more editing options so I could create a better product.
We used windows movie maker and a still camera to make our animatic. This was an easy way for us to show our storyboard with the music and appropriate timings against it to help us gain a better idea of if it would work when we shot the real thing.
For filming we used a still camera for the draft. We thought this was a good idea because it was a high quality camera. However, after doing the draft we realised we needed to change this as some shots were out of focus, for example, zooming. Therefore, on the final version and when we reshot we used a digital camera for moving images that we found much easier to use and the final outcome once edited had a much more professional look to it.
During the editing process for our draft video we used Premiere Pro CS3 and we found it fairly easy to use but parts of it were difficult. However on the final version we decided to use a programme called Sony Vegas for the editing we found it hard to use at first as we were used to the other programme; however once we had got used to it we found it much easier to use and to edit our video.
When presenting my research and ideas, final pieces and evaluation along with many other things on the blog, I mainly used scribd, slideshare, YouTube, Prezi or just the blogger settings to present the work I and done.
Overall, I used media technologies in as many ways as I felt I could have to present and create my work during this coursework process.
Draft Evaluation Question 2
Evaluation Question 2
I think that my magazine advert, digipack and final music video all link and work well together. The digipack and magazine advert use the same fonts and colour schemes to show they are promoting the same album. The music video perhaps doesn’t link to the ancillary texts as well as I’d have hoped however I think they make it clear they are part of the same genre and the main band member is seen in the video. We used black and white in the video to portray memories and I used black and white photos in my ancillary texts and this also shows a link and helps to create a sense of branding.
The digipack isn’t as professional looking as I had originally hoped for. However, I am pleased with the overall outcome of it as I think it fits well with the genre of our band and the music style we envisaged them to have. The colours I used work well together in my opinion and they also link back to the magazine advert. I decided to use bold and plain fonts and colours as I thought it would make the digipack stand out on a shelf whilst still not looking too busy. I decided to use pictures of the whole band on my digipack, (as opposed to just the lead singer, as we did in the video), because the band would be in rest of the music video and we did use all of them in our draft; it was a last minute decision to only use the main singer. I like the pictures on the digipack however I think they could have done with being reshot as some of them weren’t quite right or how I wanted them to look.
I have similar opinions of my magazine advert as I do to my digipack. This is because I think they look good together and it is immediately obvious that they are linked with the same band and promoting the same album. As mentioned in question 1, I based my magazine advert on one by Plan B. I think I replicated parts of it well, for example the colour schemes and font. However the image used on that one was more powerful and blended in more easily. After creating my magazine advert, I them did my digipack based on the ideas I used for it, this helped me to ensure that they would be linked and created a sense of ‘branding’.
In terms of the final music video, I am very pleased with our efforts and think we improved a lot since our draft version. Unfortunately, parts of it still weren’t perfect and we would have liked to have reshot a few scenes however we didn’t have another opportunity to get all of the cast members together again before the deadline. The memory scenes link to the ancillary texts through the use of black and white. The video shows links to the magazine advert and digipack as we used the same lead singer and the tone and genre of the video showed similarities.
Overall, I think the digipack and magazine advert are effective as a combination for the band JetPack Mockery. I think there a few links between the video and the ancillary texts however they aren’t as prominent as they could have been. I think a sense of branding has been creating but it could have perhaps been done even more so.

editing
We are editing in sony vegas movie studio, because of the camera we are using and the format in the camera i would have to export the files from vegas into premire pro meaning i would loose quality whereas vegas works just as well as pro therefore we decided to edit in vegas.

Shooting Tomorrow
This shows a weather forecast for tomorrow. It seems as though it will be a cloudy day but the good news is that is shouldn't be raining.
We have managed to get everyone involved in the video together tomorrow so fingers crossed we should get all of the filming complete ready to start editing. We don't have quite as much time to film as we would have liked as I have work commitments, however, we have made sure we are organised and so we will hopefully get it done in the time we have.
Shot List Locations
We are not sure why this document hasn't embedded properly on the blog but if you click on the link 'SHOT LIST' about it then you should be able to see it more clearly.

Devil AND Angel
In our music video as well as the Dad and Mum story we are also using the parents as the Devil and Angel-(the good, unselfness and the selfish violent and evil).
Most people are aware of this inner image of the spirit/angel and the devil/ego that sits on our shoulders. Alot of the time you are stuck in the middle therefore you have to choose who to go with .You get to decide which one to listen to.
While the ego is very aggressive and screams loudly that you should go with it, and fills you with fears of lack and scarcity, the Spirit is quiet and patient and waits for you to come to it but saves you from the ego when it can, and only wants what’s good for you, because it knows of nothing else but abundance and well-being.
Often times people tend to go with the loud one and think it is the most powerful. While if we turned away, without beginning to explain anything to the ego, and just give our full attention on the angel that sits on the others side, we would experience all that which we consider to be good but also be niave.
The devil tends to run away when it has the chance to escape, The “angel” on the other hand goes nowhere, and you can never lose your connection with it.
In our Video we explore this idea with the mother being the angel and we have made it so she is always on his right shoulder-as we see his come to terms and learn from his past.

Schedule and Equipment
Our final music video is due in on Friday 25th November, as this is less than two weeks away we have decided to plan what we are going to do in order to get it completed on time. As we have put a lot of detail on to our new storyboard it shouldn't take us too long to film as we will know exactly what we have to get done so we will just explain this to our actors and then begin to film each scene and shot.
14th-18th November: complete our new storyboard and finalise our ideas.
19th November: complete reshoots
21st-24th November: editing of the final version
25th November: check everything over for mistakes we could adjust and hand in our final music video.
The things we will need to take to our reshoot are: camera, tripod, guitar, docking station to play the song on in the background. We will also need to check that our cast members are wearing appropiate clothing to fit in with their character roles and the mise en scene.

Filming Progress
As far as our final version of the music video goes, we will be pretty much be refilming all of it. There may be the odd clip we keep but this is unlikely at the moment. We decided to shoot the whole thing again as we weren't happy with our draft version and feel that we can achieve much higher. So far we have filmed so of the scenes with Guy in his bedroom and we are pleased with these, however we still need to do add some more shots we have planned in this location. The rest of the filming is being planned to take place this coming Saturday (19th November). We need to do a weather check throughout the week as most of our shots will take place outside so we are really hoping that it stays dry and somewhat bright. At the minute, it looks as though it should be dry with cloud, which will be ok. Although it will be hard to get an exact forecast untill a day or two before.
New Locations and Cast Update
Since looking over our draft version of the music video we have chosen to change aspects of the locations and character roles. The location in Katie's house which shows the memories in the draft version will stay the same however we will be reshooting elements of this. We will not be using the field in which we shot the band scenes as we feel the effects of this mise en scene didn't work well or give the effect we wanted, we are also gettin rid of the band scenes so we won't need this location anymore anyway. The new locations we are using will be inside Guy's bedroom, as this give the appropiate mise en scene we wanted. We will also use parts of a forest and a park. We have chosen to use more locations this time as we think it will keep the audience's interest up.
Guy will now play the lead singer, Scott will still be playing the young boy and Henry and Katie will still be playing the parents. The rest of the band members won't be in the video anymore as our idea has slightly changed in order for us to make the narrative clearer.

Update
Our draft video scored us 10/50 which is a level 1. We did expect this as we weren't completely pleased with our draft and there were many things we wanted to change and plan to do so before we film the final one. Since recieveing our feedback, we have decided to change many aspects of our video. We are re-storyboarding the whole thing to try and create a clearer narrative. Guy will now be playing the lead singer as the teachers thought he would be more convincing and we agreed. Also, we have decided to take the band element out of the video and just have the singer, as done in The Verve's 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' video. We will also be having Scott and Guy in some of the scenes together to try and empahsise that they are the same person, as we were told that this wasn't clear in the draft. If we can, we are going to have Scott in black and white to show that he isn't really there and it is part of a memory. Finally, when we reshoot we will think more carefully about locations and mise en scene and try and have a wider variey of locations to create and keep audience interest. When we have finished our new storyboard we will post it on the blog along with a new animatic.
Tube Chop of Techniques we are Using
We have posted this video onto our blog as we like the camera angles that have been used. We think they could work well in our video and will be taking a lot of inspiration from this in our re-storyboarding process. A lot of low angles are used and we have done this in our new plan for our video as we think it also suits are new story line and the way we are showing our narrative.
Tube Chop of Techniques we are Using
The parts of this Jessie J video that we like and want to use in our video is the way in which her thought and reflections are portrayed. The camera angles and her expressions make this work and we need to take inspiration from this to show the reflective thoughts we want to use in our video. This is very simplistic but works very well and we will be considering this when re-shooting our video.
Tube Chop of Techniques we are Using
This clip from the Arctic Monkeys video shows an effect that we want to use. A younger version of the main singer is used in the clip to show a memory. This is something we will do when refilming our video as we found that, in our draft, it wasn't clear that the singer and the young boy were the same person. Therefore, as done in this clip, we will have them in the same scenes together to make this element, and the overall narrative clearer. We think that we will also keep the idea of the swing and use this in our new video, we think this works well as it is a child like thing to so helps the mise en scene also fit well with the storyline. We will try and have Scott (the young boy) in balck and white to show that he is a memory and that Guy (the lead singer) is looking back.

Filiming ideas
After the feedback from Ford and Freason we realise what what we need to do to get up to the marks we need. We are thinking about re storyboarding it out and possibly changing people in the band.
We have looked at the inspirational material we had and have decided to do something which is a dark and complex idea, possibly back to the idea of an argument and a party and the after Mathe-the extras would be easily picked because we can use people which we trust and therefore people that we can manage! but also people who Will be natural in front of the camera! We do have the issue that the band members (excluding the lead singer) will not be in the film so we will have to think of a way to avoid this however (referring to Verve, Bitter sweet symphony) they only have Richard Ashcroft in there.
We have decided to use different software and hardware. We originally were filming with a Canon 500 D however we have thought about it and we do not like the effect it gives in terms of zooming in and panning. As the 500 D is a still camera it doesn't always focus well on moving things, the panning doesn't seem to work (for me it is static). We will now film with a film DVD recorder which we believe will give a better effect and in turn will give a clearer stronger image. We did consider filming to start with with the DVD recorder however and this is my own fault I thought out of being so naive that the Canon because of it having a better Len's and possibly because it is an SLR that i should use it and it would give a better image. I was wrong with these thoughts and I have learnt that I should use them as A. it damages the camera as you film because the Len's is not meant to be used like so, and B. It is an SLR so it will focus upon what you tell it to.
We will now begin to storyboard again and we know this is going to be hard work but I believe that it needs to happen! looks like alot of long nights and early mornings as the dealine creeps its way forward into the very very close future!

Band Picture
Here is a photo of our band members. We chose to have 3 boys and 1 girls as we thought it worked well and is a bit different. They are all about the same height and we beleive they look good together as a band.

Album cover ideas
I think this one is complex when looking into the cover, because of the use of colour-there are 4 colours on the cover- the key 2 being the gold and the black, the back ground colours being the pink and greens. In my mind this alone tell's its own story-following the portayl of the song we are doing (that although there are darks, there is always something light)
This in it's own tells the dark story- with the gold being the only true colour in the image.
This image has 3 clocks and 3 colours. The gold of the clocks (showing the importance of time). The black of the numbers and the greens of the natural light.
Here there are 2 colours. I like the impact the title of the album has upon this image- also the apple in the tree. There are in total 4 clocks and one tea pot- strange as this maybe is this not the mockery of time?
This is a very simplictic image (still using 3 colours). The editing done on the image creates the noise on the hands of the clocks. I think the idea of time has a strong impact upon this. The centre of the clock is in the centre of the swirl-
Againg simplistic in terms of colours but also the image it self. The apples in the back ground bring the thought of nature to the image and the pocket watch personally makes me think it is more personal. Therefore engaging the buyer with the band.
I don't think that this font works well with the font on the clocks.
The title on this cover doesn't stand out enough for me- we have the ageing of the leaf- linking with time in the back ground but also the pick from the roses.
I don't think that the 2 clocks work here- I feel the image is unbalanced. Perhaps if i was to balance the image equally that this may have more impact.
I think this works well however the title is not very strong here.

PINK
This video explores very dark thoughts, and we aim to copy these thoughts through to childhood. It shows the girl as she grows and the pain she goes through to get there, We'd hope that we could do a simular thing through our video. Making you think, making you question. We want our video to hold a strong moral message (however dark it is). Obviously we will no be able to do the same quality because of the art etc, buyt we hope to be able to explain a narrative, we think it should be confusing. Making people question themselves, with different messages throughout it all.

Digipack Mock Up
This is my mock up for the digipack. I like the colours and think they work well together but I need to match them up more precisely with the ones used on the magazine advert. The pictures are of 'Echo and the Bunnymen' and I have just used them for the time being before I can get good enough pictures of our band. The four squares on the track list side will be individual pictures of the band members. As in the magazine advert, I am not completely happy with the font and will do more research into this to try and find one that works more effectively. This is a very simple idea and nowhere near to the standard I want for my digipack, however as mentioned, it is just to give me ideas of layouts, colours and fonts ect.

Magazine Advert Mock Up's
These are the two mock up's I have come up with for the magazine adverts; the only difference is the colour schemes. They are very much just original ideas to give me a better idea of if the layout works ect. So far I am pleased with the layout and prefer the red colour scheme, however I think the font will need more consideration when it comes to the final one and I am going to try and look on websites like 'dafont' to come up with the most suitable one. This is a very simple idea and nowhere near to the standard I want for my magazine cover, however as mentioned, it is just to give me ideas of layouts, colours and fonts ect.
